An Online DBA Is An Alternative to a Ph.D. Management from IGNOU

The word DBA stands for Doctor of Business Administration, it’s an alternative to a PhD in Management program that focuses on advanced business principles, leadership abilities, and research methods. A DBA program, like a Ph.D., requires extensive study and research in business-related fields, but with a practical, real-world focus. DBA candidates frequently research themes such as organizational behavior, strategic management, entrepreneurship, and global business concerns. A DBA program aims to produce highly trained business professionals who can give significant insights into the business world via rigorous academic study and practical application.

IGNOU offers a Ph.D. program but the course takes time and that will be hard for working professionals to complete their Ph.D. degree along with their work and to ease this problem. Interested candidates can go for the Online DBA program which is offered by various reputed foreign universities and holds the same value and recognition as a regular Ph.D. degree. Here is the list of some of the universities that provide online DBA programs:

The collection includes regular academic volumes, distance education research journals, IGNOU SLMs in archive, PhD theses, and digital databases. Remote access is available to enrolled students. Regional Centres maintain smaller reference libraries for learners who visit in person.

11) Audio-Video Production Studios– IGNOU’s Maidan Garhi HQ houses high-quality audio and video recording studios used to produce all Gyan Darshan television content, Gyan Vani radio programmes, video lectures for online programmes, and promotional materials. These studios run production operations that support both the 4 TV 1) channels and the 26 radio stations in near-continuous content creation.

12) Term End Examination (TEE) Infrastructure– TEE is held twice yearly (June and December) at designated examination centres across all 69 Regional Centre jurisdictions. For the July 2025 session: 578 courses were available in Computer-Based Test (CBT) format; 69 courses in Hybrid mode. The move toward CBT reduces geographic barriers for examination access and accelerates result declaration.

IGNOU PhD Management Programs Examination Pattern

1) Admission is Category – Based, Not a Uniform Exam There is no single “PhD entrance exam” for everyone – the evaluation path depends on which category a candidate falls into:

  • Category I – NET with JRF: No written test. Selection based only on Interview/Viva-Voce.
  • Category II & III – NET Qualified (non-JRF): NET score carries 70% weightage, Interview carries 30% weightage.
  • Category IV – University-level Entrance Test: Candidates without NET take IGNOU’s own PhD Entrance Test.

2) PhD Entrance Test (Category IV only)

  • Conducted by the University itself (syllabus published separately as Appendix II).
  • Assesses research aptitude, subject knowledge, and analytical ability.
  • Minimum 50% marks required to qualify for the next stage (with UGC 2022 relaxations for reserved categories).
  • Shortlisting for interview happens in a 1:5 ratio (seats to candidates called).
  • Final merit = Entrance Test (70%) + Interview (30%).
  • Note: OPENMAT, the older entrance exam once used for both MBA and PhD, was discontinued after 2022; this standalone PhD Entrance Test replaced it for Category IV.

3) Interview/Viva-Voce, Mandatory for All Categories – Regardless of category (even NET-JRF holders), every candidate must clear an Interview/Viva-Voce, held only at IGNOU HQ, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi (no TA/DA given). It’s evaluated across three components:

  • Research Methodology — 40%
  • Subject Domain Knowledge — 40%
  • Communication Skills — 20%

4) After Clearing the Test/Interview – Selected candidates move to research proposal submission and supervisor allocation, followed by a mandatory 6-month Course Work (minimum 80% attendance) conducted only at IGNOU’s Delhi campus.

5) No TEE, Assignments, or CBT Involved – Unlike IGNOU’s regular UG/PG programmes (which use a 30% Assignment + 70% Term-End Exam model, twice a year), the PhD track has no TEE, no biannual exam cycle, and no CBT — it’s Entrance Test/NET + Interview only, followed by research work and thesis evaluation later in the programme.
