Yes. IGNOU offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science under its School of Computer and Information Sciences (SOCIS). The programme code is PHDCS and it is a regular, campus-based programme conducted at IGNOU’s New Delhi headquarters.

Candidates must hold an MCA, M.Sc. in Computer Science/IT/equivalent, or M.E./M.Tech. in Computer Science/IT/equivalent with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD) from a UGC-recognized university, along with a valid UGC-NET score. Those without NET can appear for IGNOU’s University-level Entrance Test (Category IV).

The minimum duration is 3 years (36 months) and the maximum is 6 years (72 months). Women candidates and PwD candidates with 40%+ disability get an additional 2-year extension beyond the maximum limit.

The total first-year fee is ₹18,050/-, which includes Registration & Coursework Fee (₹16,800), RPE exam component (₹1,050), and University Development Fee (₹200). The approximate total 3-year programme fee is ₹53,550/-. The application fee is ₹2,000/- (non-refundable).

Yes. IGNOU offers a Part-Time PhD track for employed candidates. You must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer in the prescribed format (Annexure IV). Note that Course Work in the first 6 months requires physical attendance at IGNOU HQ, New Delhi, so you may need to arrange leave or flexible working arrangements during this period.

No. IGNOU’s PHDCS is a regular (face-to-face) programme. The Course Work phase requires physical attendance at IGNOU’s New Delhi campus with minimum 80% attendance. Research work thereafter can be conducted remotely with periodic supervisor meetings. IGNOU does not offer a fully online PhD in Computer Science.

Selection is category-based: JRF holders (Category I) are selected through interview only; NET-qualified candidates (Category II & III) get 70% weightage to NET score and 30% to interview; Entrance Test candidates (Category IV) get 70% weightage to entrance test and 30% to interview. All categories require attending an Interview/Viva-Voce at IGNOU HQ.

For the July 2026 session, 13 total seats are available: UR-6, SC-2, ST-1, OBC-3, EWS-1. Note that 5% horizontal reservation is applicable for PwBD candidates within their respective vertical categories.
