IGNOU PhD Development Studies Programs Duration & Eligibility
Candidates must satisfy ONE of the following academic qualification requirements for IGNOU Ph.D. in Development Studies course:
- Master’s degree with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/EWS) from a recognised university or equivalent institution.
- OR: A 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree with 75% minimum marks (70% for reserved categories) followed by a 1-year master’s programme.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offers a flexible and largely online admission process for PhD Development Studies doctoral programs. - Step 3 – Fill the Online Application Form: Enter personal details, educational qualifications, UGC-NET details (subject, score, certificate number, validity), proposed research area, and Full-Time / Part-Time preference. Phase 1: Coursework Assessment

Is IGNOU Ph.D. in Development Studies recognised for teaching positions in Indian universities?

Yes. IGNOU offers Part-Time mode specifically for employed candidates. Working professionals must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer in IGNOU’s prescribed format (Annexure IV) at the time of interview. The NOC confirms the employer permits time for research and relieves the candidate for the 6-month Course Work period at IGNOU HQ, New Delhi.
Is it necessary to be in New Delhi for the entire Ph.D.?
Not for the entire programme. Course Work in the first 6 months is conducted only at IGNOU Headquarters, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi with 80% attendance mandatory. After Course Work, research is conducted independently under supervisor guidance. IGNOU does not provide hostel facilities – candidates must arrange their own accommodation during Course Work.
What is the total fee for IGNOU Ph.D. in Development Studies?
The total programme fee for Indian nationals is Rs. 16,800 for the full programme. Additionally, there is a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 2,000. Examination and thesis submission fees are charged separately as per University norms. This programme is not available for international students.
What financial support is available for PHDDV scholars?
