What Is a Doctorate Degree?
If you are wondering what lies beyond a Master’s degree, the answer is a doctorate, the highest academic qualification a university can award. It shows that the holder has contributed original knowledge, solved complex problems, or advanced professional practice to the highest standard.
But “doctorate” is not one thing. It is a family of degrees, each built for a different purpose, profession and type of scholarship. This guide explains every major type, who it suits, and how to choose, and ends with universities where Indian students can study.
Doctorates fall into three broad categories:
- Research doctorates: Focused on generating original knowledge through academic research. The output is a dissertation or thesis.
- Professional doctorates: Focused on practice in fields like medicine, law, pharmacy or therapy. They combine practical training with scholarly components.
- Applied and specialized doctorates: Designed for experienced professionals in business, education, technology, administration and other niche fields, who research real problems from their own workplace.
Â
Universities and countries classify some degrees differently (the DBA and EdD, for example, are sometimes called professional doctorates). We group degrees by their main purpose to keep this guide easy to follow.
Most doctoral programs take a minimum of three years and can extend to seven or more. The usual eligibility requirement is a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a related field, plus relevant professional experience for many professional and applied doctorates.

How to Choose the Right Doctorate?
First ask yourself four questions:
- What is my profession today? Clinicians usually look at professional doctorates, managers at the DBA or DM, and aspiring academics at the PhD.
- Do I prefer applied or theoretical work? Applied degrees (DBA, EdD, DPS) solve workplace problems. Theory-driven degrees (PhD, DSc) build new academic knowledge.
- What is my long-term goal? University teaching and research usually need a PhD. Senior leadership roles often value applied doctorates.
- How much time and money can I commit? Programs run from 3 to 7+ years. Check fees, supervision, and whether study can fit around work.

Source & Disclosure
This list is for general information only and is not an endorsement or ranking. Program availability, delivery mode (online, distance or on-campus), fees and recognition change over time. UGC and AIU rules on doctoral and foreign degrees also change. Before enrolling, verify the university’s recognition on the official UGC and AIU websites, confirm the degree’s validity for your intended use (jobs, government service, teaching or further study), and check the accreditation claims directly with the awarding body.Â
Key Things to Check Before Enrolling Doctorate Programs
- Accreditation matters more than marketing. Verify accreditation on the accrediting body’s official website. For Indian programs, check UGC recognition. For international programs, check the institution’s accreditation in its home country, and for business schools look for AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS or ACBSP. Also check AIU equivalence if you plan to work or study further in India.
- Understand employer recognition. For Indian government jobs, the public sector and many academic posts, a UGC-recognized PhD from an Indian university is the most straightforward credential. For corporate, consulting and international careers, globally accredited programs can carry strong weight.
- Research the dissertation process. The hardest part of a doctorate is rarely the coursework. Ask about supervision, milestones and completion rates.
- Factor in total cost and return on investment. A doctorate is a major investment of time and money. Estimate the career benefit realistically, and remember it only pays off if you complete the program and the credential is recognized.
- Speak to alumni, not just admissions counselors. Alumni can tell you what the program is really like and whether the degree opened the doors they expected.

The first step is knowing what exists. Now that you do, the next step is asking yourself: which of these paths aligns with where I want to go?
Your doctoral journey begins with that question and ends with a credential that marks you as someone who did not just learn what was already known, but contributed something new.

Research doctorates (such as the PhD, DSc and JSD), professional doctorates (such as the MD, PharmD, DPT and PsyD), and applied and specialized doctorates (such as the DBA, EdD, DCS and DPA).
What is the difference between a PhD and a DBA?
A PhD is theory-driven and aimed at academic careers. A DBA applies research to real business problems and suits senior professionals and executives.
